:: GIC Projects :: Virginia :: Bellemeade Walkable Watershed Pilot, City of RichmondThe Richmond GIA identified the Bellemeade Creek Corridor in southside Richmond as a key opportunity for enhancing the citywide green infrastructure network. The Bellemeade neighborhood is also situated within a watershed that flows to the James River, and eventually the Chesapeake Bay. Like many urban watersheds, the Bellemeade creek suffers from polluted runoff from yards, streets and parking lots. The City of Richmond has prioritized this watershed for improvements to restore the health of the James River. This project will identify opportunities to infiltrate and clean rainwater, while simultaneously providing neighborhood amenities such as trails, trees and park enhancements. During a day-long working session held on October 27, city and school representatives, commuity leaders and students of the future school identified priority walking routes to the new school along with strategies to improve the health of the creek that could benefit neighborhood residents. These ideas will be refined based on input from the community open house held on December 13 and summarized in a final report, which will be available in February. Materials:
